The unit I have been teaching since Obama's first term, with every revision year-three me would have wanted year-one me to know. Twenty class days, four weeks, AP-aligned three modes from Day 1 through the summative. Day 1 opens with Marc Anthony's Vivir Mi Vida as a present-tense hook (the cheesy uncle song works on 85% of classes; the other 15% gets Bad Bunny). Week 1 anchors on an authentic-style essay about tradición and a project where students defend a tradition from México, Argentina, Spain, or their own family (heritage track explicitly invited). Week 2 pivots to educación with real OECD completion-rate data, a Schaum-style vocab packet you can give out on Day 6 (not Day 1; retention doubles), the Julián-vs-Biblioburro comparison run as 8-minute oral discussion in groups of 3, and a formative writing assessment. Week 3 runs el pretérito Cornell-style with focus on the 8 high-frequency irregulars, a 60-90 second vlog narrating problemas cuando era joven, and a quiz. Week 4 stacks an AP-style listening worksheet, a Section 2C interpersonal simulation, the summative argumentative essay (200-400 words, two sources, defending a position on redes sociales and family), and peer review against the AP-aligned rubric.
