About · The third-floor classroom

Some of the best world language teaching in America is built in a third-floor classroom in Kinnelon, NJ.

That's where Jon Cataldi has spent twenty years teaching Spanish, from Spanish 1 to Spanish IB, and building the lesson plans, units, and rubrics that became LanguagePlans.

Why this exists

World language teachers deserve better than what TPT gives them.

Walk into a typical Spanish classroom at 7:55am on a Monday and you'll find a teacher cobbling together resources from a dying textbook, a TPT zip file with rainbow Comic Sans clipart, a Google search for “ser vs estar worksheet”, and a half-finished Quizlet they made at midnight. None of it cites research. None of it talks to each other. None of it respects the teacher's time or expertise.

We can do better than that.

LanguagePlans ships world language resources that are research-backed, ACTFL-aligned, dual-language by default, and printer-friendly. Every unit cites the SLA literature it's built on. Every product comes in English-with-teacher-notes AND target-language-only versions. Every PDF has a matching editable Google Slides deck. Every page is designed to look at home in a Stanford curriculum module, not a TPT shop.

We're also building an AI conversation game where students actually speak: cinematic scenarios, authentic dialect avatars, a real teacher dashboard. Pilot starts fall 2026 in Jon's own classroom. Watch the app page if you want to be on the waitlist.

Five principles · The pedagogy

Every product, every unit, every scenario.

  1. 01 /

    Comprehensibility first.

Sheltered vocabulary, established meaning, visual scaffolds. Krashen 1982, Nakanishi 2015 (d=0.46 short / 0.89 long).

  2. 02 /

    Proficiency over coverage.

Units end in ACTFL Can-Do statements, not chapter tests. Backwards-designed from IPAs.

  3. 03 /

    Three modes every unit.

    Interpretive + Interpersonal + Presentational. ACTFL World-Readiness 2015.

  4. 04 /

Pop-up grammar in service of meaning.

Form-focused moments embedded in communicative tasks. Norris & Ortega 2000 (d=1.13 explicit FoF).

  5. 05 /

    Cite the research.

Every product page links the SLA literature. Admins love it. Teachers can defend their methods.
