The Output Hypothesis, revisited after forty years.

The Canadian immersion data

By 1985 the Canadian French immersion programs were almost twenty years old. The premise was pure Krashen. Drop English-speaking children into a French-speaking school, drown them in comprehensible input, and watch the second language emerge. The results on receptive measures were excellent. Kids understood French at near-native levels. They read it. They followed lessons in it. They watched movies in it without subtitles.

The problem was their production. Swain and her colleagues at OISE looked at the spoken and written French of grade six immersion students and found systematic gaps. Verb tense was unreliable. Gender agreement was a coin flip. The conditional and the subjunctive barely appeared. These were students who had spent half their waking lives in French for six years, and their French was nothing like that of native peers.

Krashen's framework predicted otherwise. If input is the engine, sufficient input should produce sufficient grammar. The Canadian data said something different. Input was necessary but not sufficient.

What output does that input cannot

In her 1985 chapter (Communicative Competence: Some Roles of Comprehensible Input and Comprehensible Output in Its Development) and the more theoretical 1995 follow-up, Swain identified three jobs that output performs and input does not.

1. The noticing function

When you try to say something and cannot, you notice the gap. That gap drives attention back to the next chunk of input you receive. A student who has tried to say se me olvidó and failed will hear the construction in tomorrow's cuento and lock onto it in a way they would not have otherwise. Comprehension does not require you to notice the form. Production does.

2. The hypothesis-testing function

Output forces learners to commit. You guess at the past tense ending. You commit to fui or fue. The world responds. Either you are understood or you are not. The feedback loop the learner runs in production is impossible to run in reception alone.

3. The metalinguistic function

Swain and Lapkin's 1995 study put pairs of grade eight immersion students at a single computer with a writing task. They recorded what the students said to each other while composing. Roughly a third of the talk was about French itself. The students were noticing problems, asking each other about rules, and resolving them on the fly. That metalinguistic talk was happening because the output task forced it.

Sometimes, under some conditions, output facilitates second language learning in ways that are different from, or enhance, those of input.

What the field did with the finding

The reception was uneven. Krashen himself never fully accepted the output hypothesis and still argues that any apparent benefit of output comes from the input the learner receives in response. That is a defensible position, and the truth is probably both: output by itself does little, but output that triggers feedback provides input the learner is unusually ready to process.

Other researchers built on Swain directly. Izumi (2002) ran a carefully controlled study showing that learners who were required to produce a target form before being exposed to it learned the form better than learners who only received the input. The act of struggling to produce primed the perceptual system. Mackey (2007) collected the interactionist evidence showing that pushed output during conversation drives uptake of new structures more reliably than input alone.

Why we still teach as if input is enough

Walk into a conference session on comprehensible input teaching. Read the books that get shared on Facebook teacher groups. The dominant message is still: more input, slower, bigger gestures, more repetition. That is not wrong. It is the precondition. But somewhere along the way, the field conflated “input is necessary” with “output is optional.”

Part of this is reaction. The grammar-translation classes we all sat through in the eighties leaned so far into output that students never built receptive competence at all. The CI movement corrected for that, hard. The pendulum is still out there. What Swain's research says is that the pendulum eventually has to come back to center. Production matters. Not as the starting point. As the second move.

What this means for your Monday

First, audit your week. If your Spanish 2 students get five days of CI activities and one day of writing, the balance is wrong. Production needs to be on the table at least twice a week, and it needs to be pushed: not just answering yes or no, but stretching to say something they have not said before.

Second, design tasks where students cannot succeed without attempting a target form. A dictogloss forces it. A timed retell forces it. A picture-prompt narration where students have to choose preterite versus imperfect forces it. Pair work where each partner has half the information forces it.

Third, be honest about what immersion alone has produced in Canada and what it would produce in your classroom. Forty years of data is a lot. If a student can spend half their waking life in the target language and still come out with broken French, the four hours per week your students get with you is never going to work on input alone.
